Gave competitie!

Posted by Joram op den Kelder on 18-02-2010 at 00:42:

In antwoord op de vraag van Bob:

Quote

At this time, I hope you would not mind if I draw some conclusions.

Firstly, I should like to thank all of you for the great experience of playing within DSC. Despite language and cultural barriers, you have made me feel welcomed and a part of the team. My special thanks go to Arno, for his kind and helpful nature. And also to Joram: his enthusiasm for chess inspires me to improve.

Secondly, I should dismiss the idea that I am a strong player. More than half of my wins were lucky. I apologize to Pieter, Martin, Joram, Jan-Willem and everyone else who had good reason to go home disappointed after our game.

Finally, I should look to the future. Because Spring should be coming soon to the Netherlands, it is time for a change.
I plan to start playing more aggressive, spectacular openings and engage more often into tactical fights. This means that I will probably play even worse, but it should be fun, just to see what happens.

Chess is supposed to break all barriers and bring people together. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I am glad though that here, within DSC, it holds true.

Right

To be honest: all of my wins since last summer were lucky, and various ones of my draws as well. That will be the difference between Ciprian and me.
I look forward to our next game!

This can't be said enough. Glimlach

From some point of view, chess is just a game of luck. But as winfvdm pointed out already, most wins we make, are lucky, so if only half of your games were lucky, you should be stronger than me, by example. Knipoog

Well, here we've got a big misunderstanding. There will be no spring in the Netherlands soon. Maybe May, June of even Juli. Knipoog

Even more? Hopefully we can enjoy some nice game then. Glimlach

Congrats for your first place.

I agree, sadly. But if you ask me, it should come soon.
Thank you for the congratulations!

Me too! Also because I think last time you had a better position!

Posted by Martin on 18-02-2010 at 17:23:

This all depends how you define 'Spring' , you fools!

Oh, and Ciprian, my congratulations as well. It's a nice achievement!
But be aware that the main prizes are divided in the next period :-)

I do not intend to devide prizes, they will remain whole!

You'll give everything to the winner?? Red Face
I'd have been sure the number two and onwards would be worth their share of the prizes as well....

Interesting play

We always look for interesting possibilities, I guess.
But I could have looked for an hour at the position of Iwantchuk - Aleksejew (Jermuk 2009; see e.g. NewInChess (7), (2009), 33) ...

Diagram

...without hitting on the idea of 18. f5!!? and 19. g4! (it lead to one more fantastic game).
This one and this kind of inventions in order to complicate the battle are what I admire Iwantchuk for.
My ideas are usually more interesting than correct - enabling me to lose in an original way.

Thank you, Ted! I think this small English forum is my best achievement so far.

This is a brilliant position. White seems to have a good version of a reversed Benoni. For some of the good Benoni players the idea of f5 and g4 (f4 and g5 for Black) might be familiar, though I think it is rare. I can imagine that Ivanchuck, who is a genius, would not enter such a position whithout planning ahead this positional break.
It's fascinating how a little pawn move like f5 can acomplish so much: fights to open the e-file, opens Bd2, fights for the d5 square and destroys Black's structure.

I wish I could play like that!
